This is an extraordinary example of 1950s exuberance in fashion following Dior's successful collection in 1947 heralding the New Look. There is a lavish amount of very fine silk satin in this coat. It is of the utmost quality and style wise it is very much in the style of Balenciaga and Givenchy. The high-necked collar fastens with an oversized black button, the jacket then folds in a rounded shape tapering slightly inwards and down to the bottom hem which falls to around the mid-calf point due to the open style of the coat. The wonderful construction is centred on the vertical back seam with pleating and darting to ensure that this extraordinary jacket holds its shape as it cocoons around the wearer. It is lined in an equally beautiful cream satin that has been backed with wool felt for additional warmth. The piece is absolutely of impeccable quality and just oozes class. Condition wise it is in superb vintage condition with no faults of any note. The piece is unlabelled save for a small union label but this is undoubtedly of superb construction and workmanship. We suspect this was for a major high end department store such as Bergdorf Goodman or Neiman Marcus. This style of coat is designed to be worn oversized and we would say it could pass as "one size" - it would fit XS to XXL.
